Advances in VR Nutrients (Repeat)

Regency C
Wed, Jul 26, 2017
1:20 PM to 3:20 PM

Potassium, as a non-mobile nutrient, is commonly thought to stay put in soils; however, this should not imply that soil test K levels are constant throughout the year. Seasonal variability in soil test K from spring to fall (often higher in spring and lower in fall) creates issues for soil sampling and interpreting soil test results for fertilizer applications. This session will cover soil K dynamics and approaches to mitigate seasonal K variability to improve nutrient management decisions.

Biography
John Breker is a soil scientist with AGVISE Laboratories. He provides information on soil fertility and plant nutrition to agronomists and growers in the Midwest, Northern Plains, and Canadian Prairies. John was raised on his family’s grain farm in southeastern North Dakota and has studied soils as an amateur or professional since 2007. He received B.S. and M.S. degrees in soil science from North Dakota State University in 2015 and 2017, respectively. With his M.S. advisor Dr. David Franzen, John studied several soil potassium testing methods, corn yield response to potassium fertilization, and the effect of sampling time on soil potassium levels.
