Session
Title: Workshop 2
Date: Tue Jul 23, 2019
Time: 3:40 PM - 5:40 PM
Moderator: Terry Griffin
Yield Data Cleaning & Editing

Picking up where the previous session left off, participants will learn how operator behavior impacts yield monitor data quality and how that data can be “cleaned” using the freely available USDA ARS Yield Editor software. After a brief introduction of why yield data cleaning is crucial to obtaining high-quality data, participants will follow along in hands-on fashion as instructors demonstrate the use of Yield Editor.

Participants should bring:

laptop computer (PC preferred, Mac if can boot in Windows)

Terry Griffin (speaker)
Cropping Systems Economist
Kansas State University
Manhattan, KS 66506
US
Dr. Terry Griffin is the Cropping Systems Economist at Kansas State University. He currently serves as Treasurer of the International Society of Precision Agriculture. His research evaluates the profitability and adoption of agricultural technology including spatial analysis techniques to analyze communities of aggregated digital farm data. For his achievements in advancing digital agriculture, Griffin has received the 2014 Pierre C. Robert International Precision Agriculture Young Scientist Award and the 2010 PrecisionAg Award of Excellence for Educators & Researchers. In addition to presenting across North America, Terry has delivered invited presentations in Europe, Africa, and Australia.
Scott Drummond (speaker)
Information Technology Specialist
USDA-ARS Cropping Systems and Water Quality Research Unit
Columbia, MO 65211
US
Scott Drummond is an IT Specialist for the Agricultural Research Service, Cropping Systems and Water Quality Unit in Columbia, Missouri. Focused primarily on data acquisition and analysis topics related to precision agriculture, he has been analyzing yield data for this research unit for almost 30 years. In the late 1990s, he developed Yield Editor to assist with the process. Released to the public a few years later, Yield Editor has been downloaded over 10,000 times since, from locations representing more than 45 states and 75 countries around the world.
Jacob Maurer (speaker)
Agronomist
RDO Equipment Co.
Moorhead, MN 56560
US
Jacob Maurer is an agronomist for RDO Equipment Co., focused on locations in Minnesota, North Dakota, and South Dakota. He educates growers on emerging technology and best practices for implementation, as well as helps them adapt to an ever-changing economic climate by making decisions using sound agronomic and economic theory. In 2018, Maurer had the unique opportunity to lead a collaborative team in charge of a 90-acre research farm in North Dakota’s southern Red River Valley. This agricultural land lab is a three-year project that allows Maurer and the team to experiment and collect data on every aspect of a full-season crop cycle, from tillage strategies to planter speed to non-traditional crop scouting using UAVs. Maurer is a Certified Crop Adviser and also a regular contributor to PrecisionAg.com. He holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Agribusiness from Kansas State University.
Jason Ward (speaker)
Assistant Professor, Biological and Agricultural Engineering
NC State University
Raleigh, NC
US
Jason and the Advanced Ag Lab at NC State University conducts interdisciplinary research and extension programs focused on agricultural sensing technologies, digital farming methods, and data analytics. The goal is to leverage agricultural data sources, management, and analysis to drive real-world actionable insights across commodities and production systems. Jason has worked in precision ag for industry, government, and academia for over 10 years. Dr. Ward is an Assistant Professor in the Biological and Agricultural Engineering Department at NC State and is a licensed Professional Engineer.
Elizabeth Hawkins (speaker)
Extension Field Specialist, Agronomic Systems
The Ohio State University
Wilmington, OH, NA 45177
US
Dr. Elizabeth Hawkins is an Extension Field Specialist at The Ohio State University focused on precision agriculture and agronomy. Her research interests include using on-farm research to identify methods to increase farm profits including improved crop yields, better management of resources, and the employment of effective precision agriculture technologies. Through the eFields on-farm research program, she is working to help farmers learn how they can make precision technologies like site-specific and prescriptive agriculture work, both agronomically and economically.
